No Slavery
by Senyoung Jin and Xuantong Jin
The most important human right is no slavery. Slavery means a person is forced to work or does something no matter whether he or she wanted or not. The United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article #4 states: “Nobody has any right to make us a slave. We cannot make anyone our slave.” This means that everybody has their own right to choose work and nobody can force us to do work or let us behave a certain way. However, poverty, inequality, and misdirection made some women and children become either sex slaves or labor slaves across countries.
In the passage “No Slavery,” the author described about 250 million of children between the ages of five and fourteen are working today and at least 120 million are working in mining. Mining is dangerous and debilitating for child workers. They easily died by accidents. The environment where they work is horrible. They sit slumped in their chairs. They are tired and listless. They don’t smile and they don’t play at all. Many of them who work in the mines do not attend school at all. The reason for this situation is because their parents experience a depressed economy and a dearth of education opportunities. So their parents sent a growing number of their children deep underground to work.
The passage “The Hidden Slavery” by Wendy Murray Zoba, described an orphan girl who was a victim of sex trafficking. After she was struggling in sex slavery for many years she was rescued at brothel. In the passage the author mentioned sex trafficking means buying and selling human beings. The author also pointed out Southeast Asia, Indian Subcontinent, and African and Arab countries are slave “sending “countries and they USA, Germany and Italy are the top three “receiving” countries. The author proposed about two million people are enslaved and about 45,000 and 50,000 foreign women and children cross the U.S borders with false promises and became slaves. In the passage abolitionist Henry Nouwen says: “It is impossible to fill, because of the needs can never exhaustible.”
The most significant idea is some of those women and children don’t want to be rescued and they become conditioned to the degradation. First, most of these women and children came from poverty families so most of time they don’t have any choices because that’s the way that can make them survive. For example, sweat shop is one job treated as a treasure for many children in Middle East countries because they think having a job and shelter is a lot better than struggling in hunger and sleep without shelter. Second, they didn’t receive enough education. Thus, they don’t realize what is wrong and what is right. Some people don’t have standards about what they need to do or not until they are trapped by problems. In modern society many people admire to have higher education to upgrade their status in life, which makes today’s society more competitive to have a job. Therefore, people who didn’t receive enough education find it very hard to find a job that they want. Thus, some women go to brothels to earn money to survive. At the beginning they were forced by a poverty environment from family but as time goes on they like their way to earn money without working hard and dealing with stress each day from work because they want to earn money in an easy way. The reason is money is their standard and the money is everything for them. As Wendy Murray mentions in the passage, “The Hidden Slavery,” they already get used to a life without freedom and get used to command and control by others. They are afraid they will suffer stereotyping and racism in the outside world.
In sum, it’s very important to let people know they are free to be on their own and they could make their own decision. People need to realize we have the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article #4, so they have an idea to escape from slavery. People should keep in mind the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights is not only for certain people, it’s for every single person in this world. Moreover, people need to go to school to educate themselves. By going to school they could learn more how to protect themselves from dangerous or violence situations.
