Equal Pay for Equal Work

According to UHDR article 23, “Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work.” In simple words, everyone has the right to equal pay for equal work without any discrimination like gender, race, and age. In article “Equal Pay for Equal Work” by Lily Lily, she states that “women only earn 77 cents for every dollar a man makes," which means that women earn 33 cents less than men for the same exact work. Also, she mentions that some women face salary inequality because they want flexible working hours due to childcare concerns. Finally, she says that woman should be paid equally to their male counterparts. She also mentions that there are many arguments as to why women are paid less than men and a lot of people think that men deserve better pay than women for many reasons. One of those reasons for pay inequality is named “the motherhood penalty” is more likely for women to get more time off. One major idea how women are being shown as low, weak dependable on the male is in how women are portrayed in the media that also has a huge impact on pay inequality.
First, many places have salary variation for equal work by gender difference. Also in the article, Lily Lily mentions the New York Times a reporter named Eduardo Porter states in his article that women might accept less pay to have a more flexible job schedule. Since woman became mother now her responsibilities to take care of kids come first. She expects to have a flexible schedule of work to earn limited income and be around with kids when they need her presence. Illness, involvement in activity, and the need of emotional support can take the parent way from work and create a need for flexibility. In America, we have seen a lot of single mothers employ every place as part time and raise their kids because no one will give that kind of care to kids like a mother does. According to U.S. Census Bureau, the gender pay gap is the significantly increasing different between male and female earnings. In 2008 the OECD found that the median earnings of female full-time workers were 17% lower than the earnings of their male counterparts and that "30% of the variation in gender wage gaps across OECD countries can be explained by discriminatory practices in the labor market." The European Commission found that women's hourly earnings were 17.5% lower on average in the 27 EU Member States in 2008. The female-to-male earnings ratio was 0.77 in the United States in 2009. Thus, statistics prove that women are paid less that men in the many areas.
This is a violation of human rights by paying less because of the gender difference. The problem can be solved by leaders, ruler, and people of the country. As Lily Lily mentions in the article, Barak Obama, the president of the United States, said in his speech that he doesn’t want her daughters to get paid less than men. He believes in equal pay and equal work which basically means men and women are same. Also, he raised many questions in the interviews like why man should pay more than women, what is reason behind it. That’s not right said president Mr. Barack Obama said. The President supported his statement that makes a clear point talking about human rights articles. Which protect integrity of humanity and their rights. Thus, by raising questions by a powerful man like Barak Obama can help to influence people to avoid the violation of worker’s Human Rights.
Human rights principles are recognized around the globe as a framework which protects everyone and limits actions by the town city or nation against individuals. The principles also balance the rights of individuals to promote and show tolerance, equality, dignity and respect. The United States legal system and the institutional structures are based in human rights principles. In the article “Equal Pay for Equal Work,” the author highlights the importance of the human rights articles. We have learned the principles and why it is necessary to have them. We totally agree with the article and the speech of President of United States because Americans have fought for human rights in the old days; now it’s our duty to not forget their sacrifices and make world better place to live.
